The goal is to undertake a project which will alter, or perhaps even restrain, habits of expenditure and reliance upon money. The secondary effect of 'saving' money may be desirable in itself, but ideally we are striving towards some more profound effect – the revelation of newfound insights about the nature of money and its function in our lives.
I view this as an open thread; please propose your own ideas.
Some initial ideas:
- "Restrict yourself to a finite number of instances in which you may spend money during a particular week, preferably less than seven."
- "Switch debit cards with a trusted friend. Observe and record differences in your spending habits when you are depleting someone else's earnings."
- "Institute a ratio of cents to words which requires you to compose written reflections on money in proportion to the amount that you are using it. For instance, at a 10:1 ratio, a $4 coffee would warrant 40 words of reflection."
- "Select a third party to serve as arbiter of your spending – report all expenditures to this person, or perhaps even seek their permission in advance of making a purchase."
